Known as the water thread experiment, this phenomenon shown above seems to defy the intuitive laws of everyday physics. The experiment was first demonstrated in 1863 by British Engineer William Armstrong.

Two containers of deionized water, placed in some sort of insulator (glass beakers work fine), must be connected by a thin thread and exposed to a high-voltage charge (one beaker receives the positive charge, and the negative to the other.) At a critical voltage threshold, a water bridge forms between the two containers across the thread - which remains even when the containers are separated!

Typically, the diameter of this bridge is no more than 1-3 mm, but can remain intact as far as an 25mm! The surface temperature, due to the voltage, rises from about 20 °C (68 °F) up to 60 °C(140 °F)! The longest that the phenomenon has lasted is 45 minutes.

I’ve written 55 pages in 2 days. Gonna go to sleep for an hour and a half and then get up to finish it off. Got a good bit of work to do tomorrow to finish it but I can now pretty safely say that I will have it finished which is a nice feeling.

Wind turbine generates energy floating 350 feet off the ground

Trials have just been finished on a new kind of wind turbine — an inflated, helium shell containing traditional blades that floats in the air stream. The airborne turbine is designed to capture stronger, high-altitude winds to provide a clean, portable and powerful energy option.

In the recent tests held in Limestone, Maine, a 35-foot scale version of the turbine was shown to generate more than twice as much power at high altitude than generated at conventional tower heights.

The Altaeros Airborne Wind Turbine (AWT) is transported to its location by a towable, docking trailer. The AWT is then deployed — in this trial some 350 feet above the ground — and held in place by tethers which also send the electricity generated back to the ground. Raising, operating and lowering the turbine was successfully completed a in fully automated cycle. […]

I decided to call this guy staples. He finished his dissertation last night (mechanical engineering you might know him RB?) Anyway I kept an eye on this random bag in the middle of the grass and figured a drunk person had left it there so I put it somewhere more open. He came back for it an hour later and was incredibly happy with me. Kept asking how he could repay me. I had some photocopies of All Quiet of the Western Front beside me and he put one leg on the bench and decided to dramatically read a page for me. Then in order to repay his debt he got a stapler from his bag and stapled them together really really carefully. Then he told me to record him jumping over this bush. He did quite well.

He was actually in France with me. He is entirely insane. He went off and lived in the wilderness in Canada with a friend and they only ate food that they killed themselves. Absolute nutjob that lad.

I’d love to be able to do this.
